Photograph any creature, let AI name it, and build your Critter-Dex.

About Critter Finder

Critter Finder lets you photograph any creature you find — bug, bird, reptile, mammal, or beast — and AI instantly names it, tells its story, and adds it to your personal Critter-Dex. Think Pokémon GO meets a field guide. Earn points by rarity, unlock badges, level up, see your finds on a map, and explore a community feed of what others have discovered.

Getting started

  1. Create an account with your email, or sign in with Apple or Google.
  2. Capture — tap the shutter to photograph a critter, or pick a photo from your library.
  3. Identify — the app's AI suggests a common and scientific name, category, rarity, a description, and a safety flag.
  4. Confirm — review or edit the suggestion (it's never saved automatically), then add it to your Dex.
  5. Collect & compete — earn points and badges, fill your Dex, and see your finds on the map and the community feed.

Frequently asked questions

How does the identification work?

When you capture a critter, the photo is sent to our AI provider (Anthropic's Claude Vision), which returns a suggested identification — common and scientific name, category, rarity, a short description, a fun fact, and a venomous-or-not flag. It's a suggestion you confirm or edit before saving.

Is the AI always right?

No — treat it as a helpful guess, not an authority. You can edit any field before adding a sighting to your Dex. Never rely on the app to decide whether an animal is dangerous or venomous. Keep a safe distance from wildlife and don't handle creatures you can't positively identify yourself.

Why does the app ask for camera, photos, and location?

Camera lets you photograph critters to identify them. Photos let you pick an existing picture instead, and optionally save finds back to your library. Location tags where you made each find so it appears on your map.

Location is optional — decline it and the app still works; your sightings just won't be placed on the map. You can change any of these in iOS Settings at any time.

How do I keep a sighting or my profile private?

Mark any sighting as private to keep it out of the community feed, map, and other users' views. You can also set your whole profile to private so it isn't publicly browsable. Private sightings don't share their location.

Can I edit or delete a sighting?

Yes. Open the sighting to edit its details or remove it from your Dex. To remove everything at once, see Manage / delete your account below.

How are points, rarities, and badges decided?

Each find is scored by rarity (Common → Uncommon → Rare → Epic → Legendary), and points roll up into levels. Badges unlock as you hit milestones — your first find, collecting across categories, and more. Public users are ranked on the leaderboard by total points.

I forgot my password — what do I do?

Use the “Forgot password” option on the sign-in screen to receive a reset code by email. If you originally signed up with Apple or Google, sign in with that same provider instead of a password.

How do I report inappropriate content or a problem?

Email us at eprosenhan@gmail.com with a description (and a screenshot if possible). We review reports of inappropriate content and abuse and take action as needed.

Does Critter Finder cost anything?

Critter Finder is free to download and use. If that ever changes, it will be clearly shown before any purchase.

Managing permissions

You can review or change what Critter Finder can access at any time:

  • Location: iOS Settings → Privacy & Security → Location Services → Critter Finder
  • Camera & Photos: iOS Settings → Privacy & Security → Camera / Photos → Critter Finder
  • Or open iOS Settings → Critter Finder to see all of its permissions in one place.

For full detail on what we collect and why, see the Privacy Policy.

Manage or delete your account

Delete your account and data

To permanently delete your Critter Finder account and associated data — profile, photos, sightings, and location data — email eprosenhan@gmail.com with the subject “Account deletion request” from your account email (or include your account email and username). We'll verify and complete the deletion, typically within 30 days. Note: deleting the app from your phone does not delete your account from our servers.

You can update your profile, change a sighting's privacy, and manage your content directly in the app. If an in-app delete-account option is available in your version, you can use that as well.
